Ideas, thoughts and theories

As I read the blog postings from Bill Kerr (http://billkerr2.blogspot.com/2007/01/isms-as-filter-not-blinker.html), Stephen Downes, and Karl Kapp (http://karlkapp.blogspot.com/2007/01/out-and-about-discussion-on-educational.html) on cognitivism and behaviorism, I could not do anything else than to agree with them and reflect upon my own thoughts.  Nothing could be sounder than Kapp’s (2007) expression: “what we need to is take the best from each philosophy and use it wisely to create solid educational experiences for our learners.”

As I reflected upon the questions they pose, the term multiple intelligences came to my mind.  According to Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences (http://www.multipleintelligencetheory.co.uk/), each human being is capable of processing information in eight relatively independent forms, with individuals differing from one another in the specific profile of intelligences that they exhibit (Sag, R., Savas, B., &; Celik-Kayapinar, F., 2009).

A whirlwind of ideas and thoughts come to my mind... Can we integrate the principles of one theory with other theories?  How do the constructivist and the behaviorist theories can be adapted to each one of the multiple intelligences?  Ideas, thoughts and theories... What do you think?

  1. Debra,
You pose some great questions pertaining to these theories and integrating them to make the work in specific situations. I do believe that this is possible. Everyone person we work with is different. They deserve to have material presented in a way that helps them learn. Sometimes, following just one theory does not make this possible.

  2. That was interesting the way you presented this subject. I like the way you stated you opinion then flipped it around and presented the questions to the readers. To answer your question, I think that instructor has to be able to adapt their teaching style to reach all of their children.

  3. Debra,

How are you? The discussion of multiple intelligences brings to mind the reality of the modern classroom. The classrooms of today are filled with diversity and new challenges. In order to address diversity and face the challenges, educators need to prepare lessons that engage learners and produce equitable outcomes. Therefore, it is necessary to incorporate the best principles and practices from the behavior and cognitive theories.
